The five points of the gold star symbolize the five major classes during the Vietnamese revolutions: Intellectual, Worker, Farmer, Businessmen, and Soldier. When studying other national flags, you may notice Morocco’s flag is similar to Vietnam’s flag, but its five-pointed star is green against a red background and is not as bold as Vietnam’s star.

Vietnamese families only publicly fly the flag on certain special occasions, such as Independence Day (April, 30th), International Labor Day (May, 1st ), Lunar New Year and the Death Anniversary of Vietnamese Ancestors–also known as the Death Anniversary of the Hung Kings (March, 10th, according to the Lunar Calendar).

In recent years, Vietnam’s flag made an appearance all across the country as the Vietnamese national soccer team won major tournaments. During those occasions, many people, especially in big cities, raised their flag high and proudly wore T-Shirts of Vietnam’s flag to celebrate the victories.
