Two Interesting Districts in Vietnam

Vietnam has a rich administrative system, including 707 districts belonging to 63 provinces. Some of them are particularly interesting because of their extraordinary features.

Ngoc Hoi – The International District

Vietnam is one of three countries that make up Indochina (the others are Laos and Cambodia). Ngoc Hoi district, in the Kon Tum province (in the Western Highlands) is home to the Nga Ba Dong Duong (Three-Way Indochina Crossroads), where visitors can pass through all three countries of Indochina. There is a famous saying about this place: “Three different countries hear the same cock’s crow.” You can depart from Ngoc Hoi to arrive in Laos (Attapeu province) or Cambodia (Ratanakiri province). You can eat Laotian sticky rice, Vietnamese bread and Cambodian noodles within one evening. Rows of majestic mountains, winding roads, and lush coffee and rubber plantations cover the Ngoc Hoi district, a genuine beauty of the Western Highlands.

Tuy An – The District of Basalt Columns

Tuy An district belongs to Phu Yen province in the South Central Coastal region. It boasts an authentic coastal landscape with low, rolling mountains framing the panoramic beauty of the sea, criss-crossed with shallow, pristine rivers and dotted with small rice fields. The people of Tuy An still preserve the traditions of the South Central Coastal region in their daily lives.

Tuy An district was revived after it was chosen to be the filming location for a Vietnamese blockbuster movie, I Saw Yellow Flowers on Green Grass. In this film, the main characters grow up in a village in Tuy An, set against the famous titular scene of yellow flowers on green grass.

But, perhaps the most intriguing feature of Tuy An is the Sea Cliff of Stone Plates (Gành Đá Dĩa), one of only four basalt column landscapes in the world. The others are the Giant’s Causeway (Northern Ireland), Los Órganos (Spain) and Fingal (Scotland). The stunning Sea Cliff of Stone Plates has given Tuy An district a unique and attractive flair.
